DP World and Asian Terminals Introduce First Electric Transfer Vehicles in the Philippines

On July 17, DP World, in partnership with Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI), unveiled a fleet of 15 electric internal transfer vehicles (eITVs) at Manila South Harbour (MSH). The rollout includes accompanying rapid-charging infrastructure—part of a ₱120 million (US $2.1 million) phase of the initial US $100 million investment announced in May—aimed at improving terminal efficiency by streamlining container handling and cutting ship turnaround times.

Built by Sany Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., the eITVs feature robust battery systems, fully electric powertrains, and sophisticated control systems. DP World and ATI’s engineers conducted a year-long technical and safety evaluation to ensure the vehicles meet local operational demands.

This deployment marks the Philippines’ first use of electric internal transfer vehicles and aligns with Manila South Harbour’s broader goal to transition to a fully decarbonized landside fleet by 2030. DP World’s global sustainability plan targets a 42% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, with a commitment to achieve net-zero operations by 2050. The initiative also includes the commissioning of two new electric ship-to-shore cranes, increasing the total electric STS crane count to 11.

Notably, approximately 95% of MSH’s electricity is already sourced from renewables, with plans to achieve full renewable coverage soon. Earlier in May, DP World and ATI detailed a multi-faceted upgrade strategy at the port—including infrastructure enhancements, new cranes, and eco-friendly landside equipment—with the eITV rollout as a central component.

DP World Ltd., headquartered in Dubai, operates over 90 marine and inland terminals across six continents. ATI, which is publicly listed in the Philippines, manages ports including Manila South Harbour and Batangas. The Philippine Ports Authority oversees port modernization and regulatory efforts nationwide.
